No doubt the mighty J will bring on the genocide Armageddon before then. He would not let that embarrassment bring reproach upon his name. Surely all apostates will die a coward's death on that day!

Attention Governing Body: October 2, 2014 is only 940 days away...
by Alfred inin 1823, john aquila brown (a man who is not mentioned in any wt publication) came up with a bizarre mathematical calculation which totalled 2,520 years (in an unauthorized attempt to predict the end of the gentile times).... several religions recycled this bizarre calculation, including the adventists and the bible students... when armageddon didn't come on the variety of early 20th century dates predicted by several "dooms-day" religions of that time (including charles taze russell's bible students who predicted that the big a would start in 1914), they all finally realized that this 2,520-year calculation was nothing more than arbitrary mathematical speculation derived from erratic biblical extrapolation.... except for the bible students who continued to move up the date for armageddon 2 more times (1918, 1925) and then decided to use wwi as the starting point for the "last days".. all the while, one thing that seems to remain intact is the october 2, 1914 date.
oddly, for the watchtower bible & tract publishing cult, this particular date still marks the end of the 2,520-year period (that john aquila brown referred to in his bizarre 1823 book "the even tide")... again, no mention of this in any watchtower publication.
but, for jws, that date still remains the starting point for the period of time often referred to as the "last days" or even "the generation that shall not pass".. because of this, the governing body has been forced to change the definition of "the generation that shall not pass" countless times since the early 1970's.

Be Thankful You Weren't in this Underground Cult! Literally Under-Ground
by Diest inmoscow (reuters) - seventy members of an islamist sect who have been living in an underground bunker without heat or sunlight for nearly a decade have been discovered living on the outskirts of the city of kazan in russia, local media reported.. the sect members included 20 children, the youngest of whom had just turned 18 months.
many of them were born underground and had never seen daylight until the prosecutors discovered their dwelling on august 1 and sent them for health checks.. a 17-year-old girl turned out to be pregnant.. religion was suppressed in the soviet union which collapsed in 1991, prompting various cults and sects to flourish in the vacuum that opened up.. the group - known as the "fayzarahmanist" sect - was named after its 83-year-old organiser fayzrahman satarov, who declared himself a prophet and his house an independent islamic state, according to a report by state tv channel vesti.. satarov was described as a former deputy to a sunni islamic cleric in the 1970s.
his followers were encouraged to read his manuscripts and most were banned from leaving their eight-storey underground bunker which had been dug in the basement of a building, vesti said.. prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the sect and have said it will be disbanded if it continues its illegal activities, such as stopping its members from seeking medical assistance or education.. no arrests have been made although police are likely to look into suspicions that some of the children were being abused.

Billy: I made the observation to my parents that there's only one part on the meeting that really revolves around looking at the Bible. Why is it the Bible Highlights is such a pathetically short part of the meeting? Why is it in the instructions that comments are to be kept so short that you can't develop a complete thought out of a verse?
So true. In fact, lately the brothers doing the highlights have been asking the cong to try and apply their comments and observations to the ministry.
It is very clear that JWs don't know how to read the bible, but they won't have a chance if they're TRYING to misapply every scripture!

Have you ever had " a moment of clarity"?
by elderelite inthese moments are something that not eveyone has experianced, but if you have they are with you every day.
a true moment of clarity is not something you live once.
you live it every time you think of it.

THANK YOU for bumping this thread! Great read. I didn't know these moments were real until I had one.
I was sitting on my couch, just as I am right now typing this, iPad in my lap. I had been curious about old WT writings, so I downloaded an old WT and was skimming, thinking to myself, 'wow, this Russell guy just spews numbers and dates and gibberish! Nothing makes sense in here.' then I saw him reference 606 bce as being the date for jerusalem's fall. Then it clicked, and the house of cards fell down. I right then realized that after the 'ordinal year' issue was sorted out, 1914 didn't change! A little further research on 607/587 and the scales fell from my eyes with regard to the FDS and WT. If this isn't right, nothing is right. I had wasted the first 25 years of my life in a false religion.
Then I thought, 'what about my wife? My family?' My in-laws Would just be proved right about me. I just sat on my couch and sobbed. And I don't cry. Before that I hadnt cried since my dog died when I was a kid.
I remember that moment now as if it just happened.

Books or exercises to learn critical thinking
by Captain Obvious ini was sitting at the meeting this morning (yes, still keeping up appearances), listening to the speaker and trying to understand his lack of logic.
his talk was about education.
he seemed all over the place, not really making proper points.

STOP MAKING CRAP UP!
by Sheep2slaughter ini had to start this thread in light of today's watchtower study.
in paragraph 14,15 they mention the grounds for separation.
no scriptures are sighted but i am well aware of the support they usually use.. i am so sick of the watchtower making crap up!

Soo biblical morality=knowing exactly how and when to beat your slave/maidservant/wife and how much. Just not with a rod... Remember jehovah of armies hates violence!
Honestly though aside from the dogmatic "principles", shitty examples and poor advice, today's WT study wasn't all that bad!
That one statement about a spouse's spiritual endangerment being grounds for separation had me steaming... Because that could easily happen if my wife were to tell an elder about the "spiritual discussions" we have.
